Now, I definitely feel too old to call myself a Taylor Swift fan, and I don’t like *everything* she does, but if I’m being honest, I’ve really enjoyed her newest album, “1989.” Swift’s new “more pop-less-country” sound is fitting, and I’m a sucker for good pop music- and 1989 is full of it.
The current single from the album, “Blank Space” is the perfect example of what to expect from the full-length album. The track is a catchy pop song, with plenty of tongue-in-cheek lyrics (“Got a long list of ex-lovers/They’ll tell you I’m insane”), and a nice drum loop in the background to give it an extra punch. Really, though, it’s the lyrics that make the song what it is: Swift really takes a jab at her critics and plays along with her public persona of being the “crazy” relationship girl. I’ve got to hand it to her though- she handles it with a wry sense of humour, and there’s nothing more charming than someone who isn’t afraid to laugh at herself.
Quite honestly, the whole album is pretty good. I’m planning to write a full review for it soon, but let’s just say that 1989 impressed me in more ways than one. It’s easy to see that Swift has found her niche in pop music, and I’m sure “Blank Space” will go on to be as big a hit as all her other songs.
