A Tribute To: Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley is easily one of my favourite musicians. His debut album “Grace” has been one of my favourite albums for a long time, and any time I listen to it, I’m instantly transported to the time that I first discovered it.

It was when I was in college, during my freshman year. Just earlier that year, during the summer, I’d listened to Jamie Cullum’s debut album, “Twentysomething” many times, and one of my favourite songs was his cover of Jeff Buckley’s song, “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.” Any time I hear a cover song that I love, I usually go and check out the original- just in case it’s just as good.

On this occasion, the original version was even better than the cover. I listened to Grace over and over during my first semester of college. Songs like “Last Goodbye” and “Lover” really spoke to me in particular, but I loved the whole album. Jeff’s soulful voice, the heartfelt lyrics, those killer guitar riffs…everything about it was fantastic.

Now, nearly 10 years later, I’m still revisiting this album. I’ve been listening to it a lot lately and it makes me feel so incredibly nostalgic. And very sad, as Jeff Buckley tragically passed away in 1997 (from a drowning accident); I just wonder what awesome music he’d be making today.
